Save money travelling in Europe

What are the most reliable low cost companies in Europe?

Let's go straight to the point: Ryanair* and Easyjet* are the cheapest and most reliable so called “low cost” air companies in Europe and the two with the larger number of destinations in the Old Continent.

This said, I want you to be aware of at least 5 facts that you definitely should know when  travelling with these two “low cost companies”, to avoid these two low cost companies becoming “high cost companies” for you!

What are the worst downsides of flying low-cost?

International flights in Europe can cost you less than 15 US$ but be aware:
  1. No refund.
If you loose your flight or you can't make it there is no refund and if you want to change the flights you will pay as much as you will pay to buy a new one (although the air companies will deny this fact!)
  2. No accommodation.
If your flight is cancelled or delayed forget a comfy night in hotel paid by the air company. You can consider yourself lucky if after waiting for more than three hours a roll and a drink will be offer to you!
  3. No bag.
The cheapest fares you see advertised are for travelling only with hand-baggage of little size and weight (usually less than 10 kilos). If you want to travel with a real bag you will have to pay it as an extra when you make your reservation and it is not so cheap!
  4. No overweight.
God forbid your hand-baggage / baggage being overweight or oversize: you will pay dearly for your little distraction, easily two or three time the price of your ticket!

  5.                                     Easyjet map of destinations
    No free drinks.
Snacks and drinks are not free on the flights and they are usually quite expensive!
Finally I want to make absolutely clear that I am not against Ryanair or Easyjet. Actually if I was able to travel so much in Europe it is mostly thanks to those low cost companies and their draconian policies!

This said I also believe that you should be aware of the downsides of travelling by plane on a budget. I hope you have found this post useful.

Why there are no links to the air companies?
*There is a reason why you don't find in this post a link to Ryanair and Easyjet websites.
I believe that if Ryanair and Easyjet want me to add a link to their sites on this post they will have to pay me, so I can finance my new travels! I only putting in practice their own policy “if you want something you have to pay for it!”, I feel is perfectly fair. :-)

Psssst! If you need to book their flights you can just add “.com” to their names and access their websites! ;-)
